Done! This is my first serious portrait, though it was only for practice. I could refine it further, but it’s time to move on. Painted from a photo of actor Saoirse Ronan in Little Women (I’m a sucker for beautiful cinematography), I used soft pastels on pastel mat. I’m a colorist in both my painting and photography, and I really enjoyed working with the blue, green, and purple undertones of her skin.

My latest work in progress, a portrait of actor #SaoirseRonan in the role of Jo March. This is a practice exercise, using #Unison soft #pastels on pastel board. It’s interesting to correct as I go. Along the way I realized I had her eyes too close together, nose a little too short, her ears too high, neck too squat and narrow. Using the Pomodoro technique, I paint for 25 min., take a 5 min. break to look out the window, and come back with fresh eyes.

Teaching myself portraiture, not to do portraits per se, but for a personally meaningful series I’m developing.

I believe I have painted three heads in my life, all of them ~30 years ago. Two of those were of gargoyles.

For this, my first purposeful practice, I’m painting an actor who played Jo in Little Women (from 2019).

I invite you to follow me for more real, human-made, analog art. 🎨👍 #BreitensteinArt

Here’s a little 4x6” color study I did today. I’ve been doing basic exercises (crosshatching, scumbling, mixed gradations, etc.), to master the medium I’ve used sporadically all my adult life: soft pastels. When I first tried my hand at pastels in college, I was surprised by how natural a fit they were. Then I spent most of my adult life being afraid to pursue my art. That has changed this year. I have a personally meaningful series in the works…

🌄 Happy Thursday everyone! Here is a blue hour photo of vineyard hills, about 20 minutes away from where I live. Germany has many beautiful areas, and the Palatinate region is no exception. It was getting pretty dark (I’ve lightened the photo up a touch), and I didn’t see the fox until I was processing the shoot.

🎨 I invite you to follow me for more beautiful photography and artwork. #BreitensteinArt

Could it be? Yes! It’s Caturday!

Here’s a Swiss cat in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino (Tessin).

Last for today (I think). For October in my 2025 Dolomites Calendar, which monumental mountain would you choose?

1. Sliced slope
2. Red face

🎨 There's more of nature's beauty at #BreitensteinArt.

… and for April in my 2025 Dolomites Calendar, I want to choose between these two images. Which one would be your pick? (This one is HARD!)

1. Layered mountains
2. Cloudy sunset

🍇 Your opinion please!

I’m going to print some 2025 calendars, perhaps on multiple themes. The first I’m tackling is “Vineyard Dreams,” with artistic photos I've made in the vineyards around where I live in Germany.

For March, which do you prefer?
1. Two trees under clouds
2. Vineyard sunset
3. Almond almond cherry rose [cloud]

Please leave a comment with your choice. Thanks in advance for weighing in!
