The Skillmaster
Daily writing prompt If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why? View all responsesThe skill of being a superhero was the first thing that came to mind, but I’m not sure that’s for me because superheroes all seem t have to go through some sort of freak accident and get dosed with massive amounts of radiation, or be the subject of an experiment or whatever. And I’m not not sure I want the responsibility for saving everyone from everything. And I’m probably too old for the superhero business anyway.
“Look, up in the sky!”
“It’s a bird!”
“It’s a plane!”
“It’s… who the hell is that old guy anyway?”
“Yeah, I don’t know. I bet he drools in his sleep.”
“Eww.”
“I know.”
“I think he fell asleep, he flew right over us!”
“Now what do we do? The city is doomed.”
“THE CITY IS DOOMED!”
Scratch superhero.
A real skill. Writing would be at the top of the list. It’s the first one here so I guess it actually is at the top of the list. Why? Have you ever seen how much J.K. Rowling and Stephen King are worth? Not that money is my motivation to write, but I wouldn’t say no to it. And if I could master the skill then I could write effortlessly and flawlessly and be accepted constantly.
A real skill. I think I’d like to instantly master the art of conversation. Interlocution. Say it with me because it sounds fun: Interlocution. Now very slowly: In… Ter… Lo… Cuuuuuuu… Tion. Fun? It would just be nice to talk to anyone about anything without feeling pressure or anything like that.
A real skill. I mentioned maybe buying a guitar yesterday and if I could master that skill instantly then it would make that decision a lot easier. I’ve seen a Community Ed class here titled, “Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People” but it doesn’t really promise much. And isn’t the name of the class kind of sad? “Hopelessly busy”. If someone is that busy why is playing the guitar even on their to-do list? But mastering the art of playing the guitar would be good because then I could join a band and have groupies.
A real skill. I also mentioned the possibility of taking vocal lessons yesterday. Might it not be cool to master that talent and sing like Frank Sinatra?
A real skill. Baking. Baking bread is really kind of a hit or miss thing. You have processes you can somewhat control, but in the end, unlike cooking where you can taste all along the way and adjust as necessary, with baking you have to trust to the process and hope that what eventually comes out of the oven 4 to 48+ hours after putting it together is going to be good. And for me it frequently isn’t for one reason or another. With the skill of a master baker it would be effortless and always rewarding and photo-worthy.
A real skill. Knowing when to stop writing a blog. Should blogs be long or should they be short? How much does a blog visitor really want to read and how much time to do they want to spend because they have other things to do and other blogs to visit and their own blogs to write. So having the skill to know when to stop writing a blog would be
