"We are joined by Palestinian peace cranes on their way to Washington," the theater says, "green frogs who teach the art of hopping over seemingly insurmountable problems, and gaggles of kindergarten butterflies who frolic to their hearts’ desire. Join us for a serious and silly circus."
This circus is a brand new show in the tradition of the iconic Bread & Puppet Circuses that began at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, in 1970. As usual, the show will draw on traditional circus tropes and familiar #BreadAndPuppet iconography to draw attention to the urgent issues of the day. Stilt dancers, papier-maché beasts of all sizes and a riotous #brass band make a raucous, colorful spectacle of protest and celebration.
After the show Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye #bread with aioli, and Bread & #Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

We had the pleasure last night of walking a few blocks to check out the Bread and Puppet Theater's Obligation to Live tour. It was our 1st time seeing them live. I can only imagine how cool the summer circus must be!! It was a poignant performance with a focus on the Shadow ICE Detentions. We continue our conversation with Ahmed Tobasi, the artistic director at the Freedom Theatre in Jenin, and Peter Schumann, the 89-year-old co-founder of the legendary Bread and Puppet Theater based in Vermont. Tobasi was jailed this week after Israel rounded up hundreds of Palestinian men during a massive raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. Two of his colleagues remain in detention.
