Day 2 update from Brazil!

“The main highlight today was the presentation on the Braille 200 campaign with speakers passionately talking about the importance of Braille. We will publish link.

We are very excited about our presentation… 9am Wednesday Brazil time, and 10pm Wednesday Eastern Aust time. Thanks to sponsors NV Access, LWB and Achieve Foundation.”

Hmm, encoding #braille into music tones has recently been featured in the #braille200. I think it's nice for fun. Still I'm wondering if some of you might be able to understand it in real time.

Making Braille Audible – A Musical Approach – livingbraille.eu

@FreakyFwoof @BorrisInABox So I'm finally looking at the process of posting this little piece as a so called #braille200 entry. However it also includes a bit of burreaucracy. They at #EBU wish to receive this along with so called Copyright Transfer Agreement.
I was about to write short text mentioning Braille's friendship with Gabriel Gauthier more than 200 years ago, highlighting the fact he were able to make fun at that time, and now we can do the same using different tools and technologies and braille still remains one of inspiring points in today's blind artists creations.
Please @FreakyFwoof @BorrisInABox kindly look at their article, skim the part of the submission process and let me know if you are still fine with that.

I had such a great time at the Braillists Foundation conference yesterday! It was so lovely to chat to other Braille enthusiasts in person, and get to see all kinds of archive Braille teaching aids and early Braille displays. I got my tech questions answered and received some wonderful tips for tactile drawing techniques. There was a great speaker, Eleanor Stollery, who’s done so many amazing things and is only 13! She’s done live audio description for theatre productions, acted on stage in the West End, worked as a voice actor for the BBC and told us about how Braille has made it all easier. I also had a great chat to Alan Thorpe, who repairs Braillers, who’s in the news in the UK at the moment as he’s looking to find an apprentice to take over from him eventually.
And there was a great practical workshop about different ways to develop touch techniques, using tactile toys as “reset objects” when fingers get tired. I came away full of ideas and so grateful I was able to attend. My husband enjoyed a well earned beer when we got home for driving us there and being an all round star, assisting me to get the most out of the day!

Happy #WorldBrailleDay! Read by fingers instead of eyes, braille replaces each letter of the alphabet with a group of six raised dots. If you don’t already know braille, your challenge for today is to learn how to write your name. https://www.perkins.org/how-the-braille-alphabet-works/ #Braille200

I’m excited to be going to the UK's first World #Braille Day conference tomorrow, hosted by The Braillists Foundation, but I’m a little worried about the weather! It looks like it could be a miserable day to be travelling! 🌨️☔️ I’m determined to go, even if it’s for slightly less of the day than I’d planned as I’m so looking forward to meeting people in person who I’ve only met online or on WhatsApp

The #Braille200 event on Tues evening at the British Library was brilliant - to have so many Braille enthusiasts together is very rare, and there was a relaxed atmosphere of celebration; with wine, canapes and lovely background music. Braille doesn’t get this type of VIP treatment very often! The message that I took away from the engaging panel event was very much that Braille is part of the toolkit for a blind person, no one is expecting you to use it exclusively - when your hands are tired, use audio and when audio gets overwhelming, use your hands. The fact is that some tasks lend themselves better to one or the other. It’s all personal choice.

I also enjoyed looking at some items from the library archive, including a handmade Braille book by Stevie Ronnie with beautiful binding and a children’s Braille book, by Polly Edman, that had tactile thread winding across the pages to make it interactive.
I also had fun trying out the Dot Pad again and got my hands on the Monarch too (they both display graphics as well as being multi line Braille displays) - way too expensive, but hey, a girl can dream! Tech like this represents the future so fabulously, showing that Braille is both a reading and writing medium, but now also has the potential to help blind people understand graphics and charts more easily and allow them to be creative themselves.
I bumped into several people I know which was lovely and I’m sure there were plenty of others there that I didn’t find, the joys of trying to socialise when totally blind!
There were about 230 guests and it felt so special to be able to attend this event, one of the many events being organised to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Braille.
I’m sure there’ll be many podcasts coming out from the RNIB about the event but the link below gives a taster, with many interviews recorded on the night:

I’m so excited to be going to the RNIB #Braille200 event tomorrow evening at the British Library! I’ll be resting up today and rifling through my wardrobe for something nice to wear haha! It takes something special to get me out at this time of year but an opportunity to celebrate Braille’s past and future in style is so rare! #Braille #blind
