Exciting times… my phone pinged and it was a neighbour inviting all our little lane community to come out and see what the night sky was doing!
I’ve never before seen the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, and it was remarkable to see them at our 51.6ºN latitude and with the naked eye!
With the camera, it was even more spectacular, and these are long exposure shots, processed only to reduce the distortion of an ultra wide lens (Sony 16-35mm f2.8) and tone down the highlights from the adjacent community centre.

Monday’s stunning aurora was the result of a severe geomagnetic storm caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) – waves of charged particles that erupt from the sun’s surface.
As they approach Earth, they interact with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, creating the colours we see in the night sky. Oxygen atoms glow green and nitrogen red, blue and pink.
We are currently in a period of high solar activity, called solar maximum, during the sun’s 21-year cycle. The sun has more sunspots which emit CMEs and solar flares – waves of electromagnetic radiation – and so we see more aurorae on Earth.

bundeskaterBorealis - Arctic Expedition ist eins der Spiele, die wir spontan auf derSpiel gekauft haben. Wir hatten erst überlegt ob wir es wollen und haben uns dann wegen der Karten mit den Papageientauchern entschieden es zu kaufen. Eine gute Entscheidung.
Wir sind auf einer Arktisexpedition und wollen dort Tiere erforschen und um sie nicht zu stören nutzen wir verschiedene, der Situation angepaßte Transportmittel.
Unsere Forscher werden durch die gespielten Karten verschoben und so immer wieder neu gruppiert. Es ist also ein Forscherverschiebe und Carddrafting spiel.
Strategischer als es im ersten moment aussieht. Denn sind nicht die richtigen Forscher auf einem Feld, kann ich dort keine Karte spielen und das kann manchmal richtig ärgerlich sein. Denn wenn ein:e Mitspielende:r ein offenes Ziel erfüllt hat eins selber nur bis zum Ende der Runde Zeit auch das Ziel zu erfüllen. Danach wird es entfernt. Und das können die entscheidenden 5 Punkte gewesen sein.
