I design and build my own bookcases. The problem is that I only have enough wall space to shelve about 1/8th of my collection, and I'm still buying physical books because I love them.
The rest of my collection is in boxes in the basement. It's my dream to some day move to a small former library so I can shelve and alphabetize my whole collection...and keep expanding it.
I've designed most of the shelves for standard US paperback-sized books, which also happens to be ideal for DVDs and Blu-Rays. I do have a huge number of larger and hardcover books in the basement. If I had to guess, my collection is probably at least 5,000 books. Could easily be more.
I've always built them out of pine boards because they're the most affordable. Normally that would lead to bowing and sagging over the years from the weight of the books. But I use backing boards, and put nails or screws through the back into the backs of every shelf. That completely eliminates all sagging or bending. I wish I could say that I did that intentionally, but I built my first bookcase when I was 14 or 15 years old and I just made it that way for no particular reason. My oldest surviving case is at least 35 years old, and it hasn't sagged •at all•. None of my shelves have.
