My December Book of the Month box came! I got A Winter in New York by Josie Silver. I had an extra free book credit, so I also got A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross, and added on the sequel, A Fire Endless.

Review: The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty is a great historical fantasy adventure.

Amina Al-Sirafi is a middle-aged piratey sea captain who is persuaded out of retirement and away from her daughter. What she thinks will be a fact finding and rescue mission to recover the daughter of a former crewman turns into a full scale supernatural adventure.

This book had a lovely, satisfying ending. Open ended with room for more stories, but not in a cliffhanger way.

I got my book from Book of the Month Club and read it in hardcover, as well as listening to the audiobook for some of it.

I finished The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry last night, and I loved it.
This book had...
• Delightful literary references.
• Scenes that moved back and forth between 1960 and 1939/1940
• Characters that I loved
• Descriptions of places that made me want to visit them.
• A resolution that I couldn’t guess

Currently bouncing back and forth between two different books, one hardcover and one digital book. I like them both, but I keep getting interrupted when I sit down and open The Secret Book of Flora Lea. For that reason, I’m further along in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

May Book of the Month Club Pick

It’s time to select my Book of the Month Club pick for May. I’m excited because this will be my 12th box, and I want the tote bag! I’m also excited about having a full year of books stamped with their months. Next month is also my birthday month. I’m really interested in The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patti Callahan Henry. I started reading Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld, which is my April Book of the Month. I chose it in part because the Sally main character who's a comedy writer made me think of Sally from the Dick Van Dyke show.

But 29 pages in, I'm not sure I like it.

For my March Book of the Month club selection, I picked The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty.

It’s a pirate fantasy that takes place on the Indian Ocean in the 14th century. And the author shares my first name. I’ve found that Shannons are usually amazing people.
