"[O]wner #CandyBerger said she did not discover the #Nazi symbol until she removed the covering earlier this week.

“Today we wanted to cover it all up again,” she wrote in an #Instagram post.

“I stood there in shock, thinking about what that symbol represents. What it has meant to my people … I am the granddaughter of a #Holocaust survivor, and today felt like a punch that landed deeper than most.”

Lox in a Box was founded in #Bondi and has sites in #Coogee and #Marrickville. The business had been painting and renovating the #Paddington site ahead of its opening on 9 April.

The etching is the latest in a string of alleged #antisemitic incidents in #Sydney’s east in the wake of the Hamas attack on #7October 2023 and Israel’s war in #Gaza.

Cars had been set alight and houses vandalised in the area, which is home to many #Jewish Australians, before the #terrorist shooting that killed 15 at a #Bondibeach #Hanukah event in December."

Schlanger, assistant rabbi at #Chabad of #Bondi for 18 years, was killed on December 14, 2025 along with 14 others as terrorists attacked the annual #Chanukah by the Sea celebration at Bondi Beach.

#Goldstein first met Schlanger in September 2022 when she was gravely ill with pneumonia in a #Sydney ICU. Her daughter spotted Schlanger in the hallway and asked him to come pray for her.

“Standing beside her bed, he blew the #shofar and whispered ancient prayers over Nikki’s comatose body,” the publisher said. “One day later, Nikki began recovering from the life-threatening infection. The doctors called it a miracle.”

Written by my colleague, Jonathan Judaken, who shared in a public Facebook post that this piece had been accepted by Quillette (a venue he chose specifically to reach a right-leaning audience) only to have the right do what the right does - the managing editor pulled the piece, because "she said that in contrast to the argument of my article, she did think that the left were responsible for Bondi Beach." So much for "viewpoint diversity".

It is a thoughtful and precise piece that serves as "a critique of both the Right and the Left in terms of how they think about militant jihadi Islamism as part of the Left or nurtured by the Left, showing instead how this is based on a category error, since these groups from ISIS to Hamas belong squarely to the family of hard-right religiously inspired authoritarian movements, mirroring white Christian nationalists and Jewish supremacists in their animating values and positions"
