Further to earlier posts here and here, we had an appointment with a high-grade nurse just over an hour ago.

She was absolutely lovely and confirmed that our right ear is inflammed with what looks like an inner and/or middle ear infection (likely otitis externa), but that it doesn't look like mastoiditis fortunately.

Not messing around at all, she prescribed us:

  • 28 x flucloxacillin 500 mg capsules (1 capsule, 4 times daily)
  • 5 mL ciprofloxacin / dexamethasone eardrops (4 drops, twice daily)
  • 28 x naproxen 250 mg tablets (1 tablet up to 3 times daily for pain relief)

She even made sure that we understood that if the swelling and pain spreads to anywhere near the mastoid bone, we should immediately go to A&E.

The Cult of Shiv

After having cleared both ears of the mahusive amount of built-up earwax within them and regained hearing, our right ear has decided to be a right git

It seems to have perceived the earwax being cleared as some kind of attack, so initiated inflammation protocols ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ It is currently red, swollen, and sensitive, and producing a liquidy, waxy discharge, as if to try to build the blockage back up ๐Ÿ˜ž

This has irritatingly mostly blocked the ear back up.

More annoyingly, however, the ear and associated area have become painful, so we're having to stay doped up on a strong cocktail of meds (paracetamol, naproxen, and codeine) to dull the pain, in addition to a decongestant (phenylephrine hydrochloride) and diazepam, to try to restore basic ability to function ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Plus we're intermittently using a bit of soft tissue to mop up the liquidy discharge.

Really not a fan of our body right now, but very glad that we have strong painkillers and other meds of various classes.
