@frederic_hein yes, thats a thing, esp. if you got huge projects relying on specific addons; there are also the non free ones (#blendermarket, #Gumroad,etc..) where its more likely they are maintained and work; version hopping can be a solution, but .. not the best.
4.2 still supports installing addons the old way, so there are actually 2 methods, one made for the new extensions system and install on disk, no updates, running a specific Blender version +addon for a bigger project to be safe :)
