Le Nazioni Unite hanno annunciato la creazione di una task force con l'obiettivo di garantire la continuità dei traffici commerciali nello Stretto di Hormuz, uno snodo strategico per il commercio globale messo a rischio dalle tensioni legate al conflitto in Iran. L'organizzazione ha lanciato un allarme sulle possibili conseguenze: le interruzioni lungo questa rotta potrebbero aggravare la carenza di beni essenziali e innescare nuove crisi umanitarie su scala internazionale. «È essenziale agire immediatamente per mitigare queste conseguenze», ha dichiarato il portavoce dell'ONU Stéphane Dujarric.

A guidare l'iniziativa sarà Jorge Moreira da Silva, sottosegretario generale delle Nazioni Unite e direttore esecutivo dell'Ufficio per i servizi di progetto. La task force, ha spiegato Dujarric, si ispirerà a modelli già adottati in altri contesti di crisi, come l'accordo sul grano nel Mar Nero per l'Ucraina e i meccanismi umanitari attivati per Gaza. Nei prossimi giorni verranno avviati contatti con i Paesi coinvolti per definire modalità operative concrete e verificare il sostegno degli Stati membri all'iniziativa.

Le preoccupazioni dell'ONU riguardano soprattutto le ricadute economiche e sociali del conflitto. Le difficoltà nella distribuzione dei fertilizzanti e il rialzo dei costi energetici rischiano infatti di tradursi in un aumento dei prezzi dei prodotti alimentari, con effetti particolarmente pesanti nei Paesi più fragili. Secondo le analisi del World Food Programme, se la guerra dovesse prolungarsi nei prossimi mesi, decine di milioni di persone potrebbero trovarsi ad affrontare condizioni di grave insicurezza alimentare, compromettendo i progressi ottenuti dopo anni di crisi globali consecutive.

The United Nations has announced the creation of a task force with the aim of ensuring the continuity of trade traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic hub for global trade at risk due to tensions linked to the conflict in Iran. The organization has raised the alarm about the possible consequences: disruptions along this route could exacerbate shortages of essential goods and trigger new humanitarian crises on an international scale. “It is essential to act immediately to mitigate these consequences,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

Jorge Moreira da Silva, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the Office for Project Services, will lead the initiative. The task force, Dujarric explained, will draw inspiration from models already adopted in other crisis contexts, such as the Black Sea grain agreement for Ukraine and the humanitarian mechanisms activated for Gaza. In the coming days, contacts will be made with the involved countries to define concrete operational modes and verify the support of member states for the initiative.

The UN’s concerns primarily relate to the economic and social repercussions of the conflict. Difficulties in the distribution of fertilizers and rising energy costs risk translating into an increase in food prices, with particularly heavy effects in the most fragile countries. According to the World Food Programme’s analysis, if the war were to continue over the next few months, tens of millions of people could face conditions of severe food insecurity, jeopardizing the progress made after years of consecutive global crises.
