“This is worse than Cuba”: Thousands of Mobile Home Residents in #Miami Fight Eviction by #AffordableHousing Developer

December 7, 2024, By Adam Weaver, Robin Young, and Juan Verala Luz of the #BlackRoseAnarchistFederation via #IGD

"A new fight over housing has erupted in the Miami suburb of #Sweetwater, culminating in local police tackling and arresting an elderly resident leader. On November 13th thousands of residents living in the massive 900 unit Li’l Abner Mobile Home Park received a surprise notice taped to their doors, on top of garbage bins, and strewn around in dark puddles on the property, announcing they had only months until they would be displaced from their homes. Those who were aware and could understand these notices quickly spread awareness to those who didn’t or couldn’t, as soon residents will have nowhere to go.

"Rental prices in Miami-Dade County have skyrocketed by 58% over the past five years and the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is now over $3,300 per month according to Rent.com. The population of the park is almost entirely multi-generational, working-class Latino immigrants, with a significant number of them being elderly and disabled residents living on fixed incomes who find the park to be one of the few affordable options left in the region."

[ Turning the Tide: An Anarchist Program for Popular Power.

On May 1, 2023, Black Rose/Rosa Negra released the first edition of our organization’s political program: Turning the Tide: An Anarchist Program for Popular Power. The writing it contains is the product of nearly two years of collective research, discussion, and debate among the members of our organization.

We built this program with the intent of establishing for ourselves a clear picture of the world we inhabit, the social structures that dominate us, and a strategy for accomplishing our short and medium term objectives in the present conjuncture. All of this toward the end of achieving our ultimate objectives of social revolution and libertarian socialism.

Our program is a living document, not meant to stand above reproach, but to be updated and revised in accordance with the real and changing conditions of the world around us.

Below you will find each section of Turning the Tide laid out for reading on a browser. We have also made available for download a printable PDF version of the document.

We invite those from the US and beyond to read the document and to provide your thoughts, reactions, and constructive criticisms. If you find yourself in agreement with our program’s contents, we invite you to reach out to us directly.

For popular power!
For a world free of domination!
For libertarian socialism! ]

In the expansive terrain of anarchist history, few events loom as large as the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Countless books, films, songs, pamphlets, buttons, t-shirts, and more are rightfully devoted to this transformative struggle for social revolution by Spanish workers and peasants. But digging through the mountain of available material, little can be found on black militants in the Spanish revolution, like the one featured in the powerful photo on the cover of this reader — a member of the Bakunin Barracks in Barcelona, Spain 1936, and a symbol of both the profound presence and absence of Black anarchism internationally.

For more than 150 years, black anarchists have played a critical role in shaping various struggles around the globe, including mass strikes, national liberation movements, tenant organizing, prisoner solidarity, queer liberation, the formation of autonomous black liberation organizations, and more.

Our current political moment is one characterized by a global resurgence of Black rebellion in response to racialized state violence, criminalization, and dispossession. Black and Afro-diasporic communities in places like Britain, South Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Colombia and the US have initiated popular social movements to resist conditions of social death and forge paths toward liberation on their own terms. Given the anti-authoritarian spirit of these struggles, the time is ripe to take a closer look at anarchism more broadly, and Black anarchism in particular.
