"Our University of Southern Maine (USM) students and DJ’s are honoring Black History Month at WMPG. This year’s theme is #BlackResistance. You will hear specially curated playlists from DJ’s. Our students are producing audio which will highlight achievements and contributions, including #PreColonial history plus profiles of contemporary figures recognizing people from politics, education, pop culture, sports and other areas. Featuring stories about #ATribeCalledQuest, #Beyonce, #OtisRedding, #JamesBaldwin, #ToniMorrison, #BadBrains, and #RobertLewis."

This yr. theme is #BlackResistance & IMO, the epitome of this is Nelson Mandela.
Although he was imprisoned for 27 yrs for fighting for #freedom, he refused to give up the struggle or give in to hate. He was fighting against #apartheid, but he was also fighting for #Equality & a better world, in which ppl. of all race & colour could live together in #peace

Reading about Madame Stephanie St Claire made me think of this 2019 episode of Criminal. In it, Phoebe Judge interviews Bridgett Davis, whose mother Fanny started a Numbers operation in the 1950s when she couldn’t find steady work.

Davis paints a sensitive and detailed portrait of the importance of the Numbers to Black communities who were barred from legal avenues of economic security.
