Liebes #Barbie Team, jetzt seid ihr schon echt groß in #blackrepresentation und #diversity und dem Zeigen von #Disability, ich hätte gern noch ein wenig #trans representation, danke sehr!
Why is this something I’m mentioning?
Growing up in the 80s and 90s (probably like many people of color in the U.S.), I was inundated with portrayals of white people. I’d internalized white supremacy, wished I was white, and rejected culture and traits my family shared as I viewed it as inferior—trying to use “proper English” and not African American Vernacular English being one that is strongest in my mind.
For context, my parents didn’t want me watching much content featuring Black folks that did exist since much of it had content they found objectionable.
It takes work to withstand racism (externally AND internally).
Perhaps we should also divest from universities and start reimagining how we obtain/share knowledge.
“Cambridge’s Emmanuel College has severed ties with a philosophy fellow after his remarks on race and meritocracy sparked controversy. Nathan Cofnas faced backlash for suggesting that in a merit-based system, #BlackRepresentation would be limited outside of sports and entertainment.” #racism #BlackMastodon

Serious question for the #black #MediaAnalysis people on here...
Does the new #Knuckles series count as #BlackRepresentation?
I mean, sure, he's an alien (or mutant, depending on the canon), but he's almost always been black-coded, voiced by a black man (Idris Elba), and the animal he's styled after (echidna) is from an area where the native population is black (austrailia).
...then again, he's also not from this planet.
So does he count?
A friend on YouTube, Anthony Perdue, pointed out to me the character Tiny in Little Audrey comics, a rare non stereotyped African American hero in solo and Audrey stories as early as 1953. This story from LA #36 is his first and only cover appearance, although he is colored more like sunburned on the cover than the brown he appears inside the book.
