One of the many Neolithic chambered long barrows around Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Walesfor today's #StandingStoneSunday offering.

Pen-y-Wyrlod above the Afon Gwy/River Wye; the long barrow itself has been ploughed down, leaving these stones from its chamber exposed.

This visit May 2012.

Y Mynyddoedd Duon (the Black Mountains) in South Wales for today's #StandingStoneSunday

The wrecked Pen y Beacon stone circle, situated at the foot of the summit of the same name (Hay Bluff in English). Only one sizable stone remains standing, although there are numerous smaller stones buried in the turf. Tremendous views and sometimes an ice-cream van.

This visit May 2012 while walking Offa's Dyke Path.

Last stone standing in Pen-y-Beacon (Hay Bluff) stone circle for today's #StandingStoneSunday.

Rather forlorn next to a parking area now (although it does sometimes have its own ice-cream van), the circle stands at the foot of Pen-y-Beacon/Hay Bluff in the Black Mountains. It has great views all the way to Y Mynydd Ddu on a clear day.

This visit April 2010 on a walk from Talgarth to Hay-on-Wye along the northern summit of the Black Mountains.

Hiking in Wales last weekend, and I was much taken with this vertiginous valley. The lower slopes looked extraordinary, and hard to access, but I was seriously tempted to return and try them.

Just to say that all paths and byways lead to @the.riflemansarms in Glastonbury this Saturday for Whistling Treason Soundsystem !

Who likes this old post ? I was hiking in the Black Mountains with friends last weekend and couldn't resist this lichen covered beauty.

Carreg Waun Llech on the limestone hills south of Crickhowell, South Wales for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Great views of the Black Mountains and Pen y Fal (The Sugarloaf) from here.

Visited May 2010.

A moody day in South Wales for #StandingStoneSunday.

This is Carreg Wen Fawr Y Rugos stone row (something of a rarity in this area), up on the limestone hills above Llangynidr, with marvellous views north across the Usk valley to the Black Mountains.

The row consists of a very long, tapering recumbent stone (if upright it would be over 2m tall) and at least 8 other smaller standing stones.

Visited on a drizzly day in May 2010.
