The Children Are Under Attack — and They Are Not Well

Trump’s cuts to health care, food aid, after-school programs, and education programs put millions of children at risk.

Join us for a morning of #storytelling , #art , #food, and music as we create a #ChildrensBook about seed, migration, and friendship.

Date/time:
Saturday, September 6 · 10am - 12pm
Doors at 9:50am

Come meet Kofi -- a Collard Green #seed with a beautiful story to tell!

In our children’s book Kofi and the Seed Seekers, Froggie, Toto, and Donkey meet Kofi, who tells them about the journey of #CollardGreens from the West Coast of #Africa to #TurtleIsland , and why this plant is so important for culture and history.

We are inviting you to help us make this story come alive!

What will happen?
Meet Razan the Illustrator of this beautiful book and let's help her to refine the concept. We'll do that with the following activities:

#StoryCircles

Let's read the book together.
Share your memories about food, plants, and cooking.
Talk about what reminds you of home and what your elders or relatives taught you about land and food.

#ArtMaking
Help design Kofi’s friends -- Froggie, Toto, and Donkey.
Create drawings, paintings, and collages inspired by your food stories.
#CulturalCrops Map Wall

Place your food or spice on a big map.
Show where it comes from and how it connects to your life today.

#Food & #Music Sharing
Enjoy snacks together.
Listen to music that celebrates our cultures.
Mini Pop-Up Exhibit
See foods, recipes, and items connected to our stories and history.

Why join us?
Your stories, memories, and art will help shape the Kofi and the Seed Seekers book and our #documentary. Together, we will celebrate food, #migration , and the wisdom of our #cultures.

Language: This event will be delivered in English.
Stroller & wheelchair friendly access. Gymnasium doors will be both left wide open.

For years, Julius Arile and Robert Matanda thrive among the bands of warriors that terrorize the North #Kenyan countryside. Stealing cattle, raiding and running from the police is the only life they know. So when both warriors suddenly disappear from the bush, many assume they are dead or have been arrested. Instead, they trade in their rifles for sneakers—in the hopes of making it big as professional #MarathonRunners.

I just watched the #NickelBoys (2024), a #GoldenGlobe & #Oscar Nominee for #BestPicture this year, at my local #AMC today.

The movie is about 2 #BlackKids who were incarcerated in an abusive to #ReformSchool in the south where later many unmarked graves of children who were held & killed there were later found.

The Nickel Boys is shown in a narrow TV like screen (not in widescreen) & is shot from a close-up perspective of each of the boys (and later one of them as an adult) mixed in with a montage of scenes relating to #JimCrow & the #CivilRights movement which helped to advance the arc of story.

While I found the cinematic approach lacked continuity, it was an interesting & enjoyed the movie overall. I'd give it a 6 for entertainment value & a 7 for it's unique artistic approach.

It didn't win the Golden Globe for Best Picture & I don't think it'll win the Oscar either but I think that it deserved the nomination.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it where/whenever you can.

Sweet little #sisters were enjoying some colouring & paper crafts. The older was more reserved; the younger girl was more extroverted.
Their Mom was holding their baby brother & gave consent to take/post photos of her beautiful & creative daughters 💗
