Black History Month lecture delivered by Professor David Olusoga OBE
To celebrate Black History Month join us for a lecture with award-winning writer, historian and broadcaster, Professor David Olusoga OBE.
The University of Manchesterβs Professor of Public History, David Olusoga will explore what it means to be Black and British, and the role of Black History.
David Olusoga was awarded an OBE in 2019 for services to history and community integration. He specialises in the British Empire and how we experience its lasting effects in modern society. David has presented historical television programmes on the BBC. His television credits include Civilisations, Black and British, Our NHS: A Hidden History, A House Through Time and the BAFTA award-winning Britainβs Forgotten Slave Owners.
His book, Black and British: A Short, Essential History, has recently been published especially for children as a follow-up to his best-selling 2016 exploration of the relationship between Britain and Africa. It presents children with an essential opportunity to study often-overlooked details of British history. At a time when there is huge debate around the best ways to teach children about the history of the British Empire and race in the classroom, Olusoga himself describes this book as 'the book I wish I had been given to read when I was at school'.

Black Tudors: Three Untold Stories
Dr Kaufmann tells the intriguing tales of three Africans living in Tudor England: a diver, a Moroccan woman and a porter.
A lecture by Dr Miranda Kaufmann, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London
17 October 2019 6PM BST
https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/black-tudors
Dr Kaufmann tells the intriguing tales of three Africans living in Tudor England β Jacques Francis, a diver employed by Henry VIII to recover guns from the wreck of the Mary Rose; Mary Fillis, a Moroccan woman baptized in Elizabethan London; and Edward Swarthye, a porter who whipped a fellow servant at their master's Gloucestershire manor house. Their stories illuminate key issues: β how did they come to England? What were their lives like? How were they treated by the church and the law? Most importantly: were they free?
Gresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. There are currently over 2,500 lectures free to access.
