Ram Jam's Black Betty seems to be blowing up on TikTok among Gen Z types. The first time I heard it was in the late 1970s. I was in a chalet après-ski. While that might sound "bourgie", I grew up in Quebec and like everyone just skied in winter. There was a slope for every wallet. The one we went to regularly had a cheap ass pommel lift and was one slope that was pretty much a straight on suicide run into the aforementioned chalet. They trusted people to remember to stop before slamming into the cinder block walls painted wood brown. Anyway, I'm in the chalet and this one guy -- young, Fracophone AF, and probably spoke Joual -- dumps about $10 in quarters into the juke box and just plays Black Betty on a continuous loop. Good times. I will always associate that song with 25 cent steamés and weak hot chocolate.
And, man, the lead singer looks like every C64 BBS sysop I ever knew in the 1980s.
