Fox Sparrows made an appearance this week. They are regular residents in my area during the winter. These attractive large sparrows nest from the far north in N. America down to Canadian maritimes in the east. In the west, Fox Sparrows nest down to Colorado in the Sierra Nevada. Interestingly, populations in Alaska winter in the eastern U.S. This is a bird with complex taxonomy across its wide range, with 16 subspecies in 4 groupings. And the distinct groupings have different habitat preferences.
