A pied-billed grebe with a soon-to-be ex-frog…

I tried and failed (again) to get a good look at the vagrant red-flanked bluetail at Great Falls National Park, but I did have a good time on the bird walk anyway. So: a double-crested cormorant, trailed by a pied-billed grebe; a pair of ring-necked ducks; a yellow-rumped warbler; and some great blue herons in a rookery along the Potomac.

I went to Great Falls (Virginia side) to try to spot the red-flanked bluetail that has been reported there. No joy. I did, however, spot a rock with common mergansers and American black ducks, a double-crested cormorant, a black vulture, and what I think is a painted turtle.

The last (that I'll post) from Point Reyes: a California scrub-jay, a pair of California quails, a pair of great horned owls, and some elephant seals, two adults and a pup. (This is the time of year when they give birth, so it's a great time to see them along the California shore.) The owls were interesting—the ones I've seen generally roost inside the leaves, not on bare branches.

Some more Point Reyes pictures: a pair of cinnamon teals, a Say's phoebe, a spotted towhee, and a western bluebird.

Before the ACM CS+Law conference, I spent a few days at Point Reyes National Seashore, of course taking pictures. So: a western meadowlark, a white-crowned sparrow, a pair of red-breasted mergansers, and an elephant seal.

It's been a while since I got to spend some good time birding and see a bunch of birds. Most of them were common winter birds around here, but hey, so what. And then there was the red-shouldered hawk, which are not common in New York but are in the DC area.

It's Superb Owl Sunday!

A long-eared owl (Central Park, NYC), an eastern screech owl (Inwood Hill Park, NYC), a barred owl (Central Park, NYC), and a spectacled owl (Arenal Hanging Bridges, Costa Rica).

I went to the Blue Mash Nature Trail today in hopes of seeing a rough-legged hawk that has been reported there. No luck on that, but I saw what is (probably) a sharp-shinned hawk and a brown thrasher.

So many fish crows gathering at sunset that it's not just a murder of crows, it's a shareholder meeting of Murder (of Crows), Inc.
