A hidden treasure in the holly bush — five eggs! 🪺 A song thrush (Turdus philomelos) has chosen our garden to raise her next generation. That stunning turquoise-blue with black speckles is unmistakably hers. What makes the song thrush nest extra special is the interior: unlike most birds, she plasters the inside smooth with a mixture of mud and rotten wood, leaving it completely bare — no soft lining at all. A tiny detail that sets her apart from her close relative the blackbird.

Een verborgen schat in de hulststruik — vijf eitjes! 🪺 Een zanglijster (Turdus philomelos) heeft onze tuin uitgekozen om haar volgende generatie groot te brengen. Dat prachtige turkooisblauwe met zwarte spikkels is onmiskenbaar van haar. Wat het nest van de zanglijster extra bijzonder maakt is de binnenkant: anders dan de meeste vogels bekleedt ze de nestkuip glad met een mengsel van modder en vermolmd hout, zonder enige zachte voering. Een klein detail dat haar onderscheidt van haar naaste verwant de merel.

I accidentally discovered this nest with eggs while replacing a window on the attic.
If you find a bird nest: don’t move it, don’t disturb it, and keep your distance. In most cases, the parents will return if left undisturbed.
Just leave it in peace. I’ll leave it completely undisturbed from now on.

Yesterday while working on stuff around the house, I stopped to watch a couple of House finches have a territorial dispute in the overgrown front yard.
I walked over there just to take a look, and took a moment to examine the broomsage blue stem grass. I noticed the little white puffs of down.
I remembered where I had noticed it. In the house finch nest.
So this bird probably used cat hair and plant down in its nest. (the down might not have been intentional.)
