Guest Scientist from #India Develops Sepsis Sensor
Sepsis diagnosis currently relies on laboratory blood tests—and often comes too late. Researchers are currently exploring several approaches for faster detection using sensors. A joint research project by #TUBAF and KL University in Andhra Pradesh focuses on an electrochemical system based on biofunctionalised nanocomposites capable of detecting two sepsis biomarkers.

So how do you turn contours (see previous post) into surface geometry? Well you can create a "levelset image", it is a bit like a heat propagating positively outward and negatively inward from the contours. Instead of heat though you can use the distance to the contour. Next you can draw the isosurface at the level 0 to retrieve the surface.
If one segments stuff using voxel labels it can be hard to retrieve a smooth result. Here however the contours are smoothly interpolated curves and the isosurface is smoothly interpolated as well. Hence there is naturally less of a stepped-Lego issue :).
In the video below the image on the right is the wobbly STL that comes with the Visible Human project. I tried to do better based on the contours-level set approach. I can also control the surface mesh density as you can see in the middle image.

Carnegie Mellon University scientists have engineered microscopic robots, called AggreBots, using human lung cells. These bio-robots move with cilia, the tiny hairlike structures that naturally propel particles in the lungs. Researchers demonstrated for the first time that cilia-driven biological robots can be guided with precision. Published in Science Advances, this work opens new possibilities for targeted drug delivery, minimally invasive therapies, and future biomedical innovations. The approach shows how human cells can be re-engineered into active therapeutic tools, advancing the next generation of medical treatments.

For Buckeye faculty and students, the school year is well underway, but so is on-campus construction. A new complex is soon to be established on Ohio State’s Columbus campus, with updated facilities and laboratories that involve student involvement, hands-on learning and better student-to-teacher interaction. The new Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex is expected to be […]
