RIP James “Blood” Ulmer

Back in the late 90s I got wise to Ornette Coleman and his harmolodic phase; a concept that is equal parts avant-garde jazz with an attitude that is punk as hell, and influenced a lot of great artists, mostly in NYC, who pushed an immense number of boundaries. One of those people is James "Blood" Ulmer, who played with Coleman, and then carved out a wildly careening path since. He passed away this week, at 86, and leaves an influential if obscure (to the general public), legacy. NPR did a […]

Funkcronomicon is a 1995 various artists collection of tracks produced by Bill Laswell under the name Axiom Funk, after Laswell's associated record label. It is a 2-CD set that was released by Island Records. Funkcronomicon features heavy participation from various members of Parliament-Funkadelic, to the degree that Funkcronomicon is widely considered to be a full-fledged P-Funk album. - Wikipedia

Hallucination Engine is a 1994 album by the New York based music group Material. The album mixes jazz, dub, funk and Indian music.

Review by Rick Anderson

...the combination of Wayne Shorter and various North African elements is certainly interesting. In fact, the array of guest musicians is more diverse than ever: Trilok Gurtu, Jonas Hellborg, Zakir Hussain, Bootsy Collins -- the list goes on and on and even includes William Burroughs (who intones a hilarious list of "Words of Advice" over a churning mid-tempo funk groove)...

Matik, “Indigo” from Rhythm Science (2004)

Rhythm Science is a print and audio project by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal kid (as it states right there on the cover), who penned a slim volume, a kind of manifesto/wordscape for electronic music production via #DJ sample culture, and assembled an accompanying CD compilation of tracks full of sounds from the archive of Belgian label #SubRosa that traverses that territory.

The track that first got my attention was a spoken word piece by #PattiSmith over electronic washes of sound. There are also some atmospheric cut-and-paste sample-fests that you’d associate with #DJSpooky. Prominent names such as #BillLaswell and #LeeRenaldo of Sonic Youth appear here, and others I would call ‘genre-famous’ like #Oval and #Seefeel - and a piece by #Debussy with warm crackly vinyl noise, tying it in with the #turntablism theme.

This track by Matik bubbles with suggestions of #dub, feels like #ambient but pulses with rhythm and features repeated melodic phrases, flirts with #ElectronicGlitch but rides on an undercurrent that remains smooth.

"Rockit" is a composition recorded by American jazz pianist #HerbieHancock #and produced by #BillLaswell and #MichaelBeinhorn. Hancock released it as a #single from his twenty-ninth album, #FutureShock (1983). The selection was composed by Hancock, Laswell, and Beinhorn. The track was driven by its deejay #scratch style, performed primarily by #DXT, and its music video created by #GodleyAndCreme, featuring the robotic art of #JimWhiting.

#NowPlaying Arcana 'The Last Wave' CD (DIW, 1996)

Can it really be 30 years since this brilliant album was released by a superlative “power trio” (for want of a better expression) of improvisors comprising Derek Bailey, Bill Laswell and Tony Williams?

Williams’ room-filling drumming is such a brilliant foil for the shards of Bailey’s explosive electric guitar attack. So sad that the former died the following year, aged just 51.
