I forgot how much I dislike replacing bike tires. My hands are not strong enough to pull a tire over alone. Which explains why my rear tire was so worn the casing was peeking through.

Related to this: It really was the first warm weekend, and I went to a (larger) 100k long group ride. Because my pedalling felt weird the day before, I measured my chain and replaced it. But what forgot to check was wear of the sprockets. So my chain kept skipping in the fastest three gears... 🤦
The lesson is to always do a quick spin after any repair / maintenance.
Yay. That must be ragebaiting for sure...
I actually agree. We must embrace simple and maintainable technology. Draw a line in the sand and restrict ourselves to "lowtech" solutions that work long term.

Really ambiguous feeling about my Vittoria Mezcal tires. (I use 29/2.35) They are super fast, but not nice if it gets muddy or wet. So very slippery...
I'm wondering if anyone switched from Mezcals to other tires with a little more grip. What did you switch to? How was your experience?
Rear derailleur skips a gear...
Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but it took me far too long to figure out. So posting in case it helps others. Old trek dual sport with 8 speed Shimano Acera would skip one gear near the middle of the range, and be very noisy on those cogs. I assumed I had a bent hanger… nope. Tried numerous other things to figure out what I had done to cause this. Turned out to be the shift cable was attached on the wrong side of the cable clamp post, causing too sharp an angle for the cable and ever so slightly changing the pull ratio. The only way I figured it out was that I remembered some obscure web page that talked about doing this on purpose as a hack to get incompatible shifter and derailleur to work together. HTH someone.
Cleaning a bike for waxing, still some grease left. What to do?
I want to switch to wax. For preparation, I am cleaning my cassette, the gears in the bicycle derailleur (and the derailleur frame), and the bicycle chainring (I don’t need to clean the chain because I am getting a new one). For the job, I got white spirit, isopropyl alcohol, and a brush, and I cleaned them as well as I could, but, for example, on the cassette there are still some black dots left and, when touching them, they are still a little greasy. How clean do the components need to be, and how can I get rid of the leftover grease?
Bike project for the next a little while: rebuilding and restoring this old 1999/2000 Gary Fisher „Gitche Gumee”.
It’s spent the last 15-ish years outside (mostly under a roof), but I have a bit of a soft spot for it, since it’s the bike that my dad used to ride when we rode together.
At first I thought it looked worse than it was, and I was only planning to do the bare minimum to make it ridable. But the more I dug in, the more it became apparent is that it needs to be stripped, cleaned, regreased and rebuilt or it’ll always feel like shit. To the bike stand then!

First bike with a seatpost wedge clamp, and this video helped me a *lot*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dm2wJutGaY
Best way to remove frame paint?
