Knipex Pliers Wrench
One staple in my toolkit and tool roll are the versatile Knipex Pliers Wrenches. With their smooth parallel jaws they can replace every size of spanners - metric and imperial up to their capacity. The smaller wrench from my tool roll is merely 125mm long and can grip up to 25mm or 1" and the bigger one living in my toolbox can manage up to 35mm or 1 3/8". On modern bikes there are mostly bolts with inside hex, but there are still solid use cases for the wrenches:
🔸During the Rookie training of the MTB Club Konstanz I removed a basket off a bike which was fastened with nuts and bolts
🔸Trueing disc brake rotors
🔸Field repair of a dropper post
🔸Opening air chamber of a suspension fork
🔸Countering an end cap on a wheel hub when adjusting the play of the conical bearing
🔸Tightening a valve core
🔸Crimping end cap on shifting cable
🔸Pulling shifting cable tight before fasting it to the derailleur
🔸Pulling foreign objects from tyres
🔸Countering bladed spokes or tightening spoke nipples
🔸opening chain link
🔸 Removing/installing E-clip and safety pins on brake pads

Snacks for the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
In addition to the bottle on the bike I packed a 2 liter bladder with plain water as refill for my bottle. Most of the time I mixed it with syrups. The sugar of the syrup made for a hypotonic solution, so the water can be absorbed faster into the blood and the fruity flavour provided some taste.
Some protein bars and sweet and savory peanuts as trail side snacks Peanuts are a good source of protein, fat, fiber and trace elements, especially magnesia and sodium. Encased in sweet chocolate or salty crust they come with some extra carbohydrates. Plus they are the perfect size for quick and easy portioning. The protein bars are a bit more cumbersome in that regard and they become sticky quite in warmer weather.
And finally sweet and sour gummies for a quick energy boost on long climbs. In 2023 I cycled around Lake Constance (about 200km in 9,5h) and a pack of gummy bears fueled me for the last 30km to get me home. So I packed this super fuel again.
That's it with the preparations. In tomorrow's post the journey starts with travelling from Constance to Passau.

What I packed for the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
Suffice it to say I check the weather reports extensively. This is what I packed:
- tissues for my runny nose
- electronics bag with charger and cables and adapters
- Lupine Nano with large battery pack which doubles as a power bank, small tail light
- Insta360 One X with stick
- a small chain lock
- a zip off wind breaker, which a later swapped for a gilet and a separate warmer mid layer (both of them lighter and more versatile)
- Assos Mille GTS C2 bib
- Platzangst shorts for on the bike
- Endura shorts for off the bike
- Speedy swimming trunks
- Endura MT500 Burner LS jersey
- Endura SS jersey (mostly for sleeping)
- Grip Grap base layer
- cotton t-shirt "eye of the biker"
- 3 pair of socks (1 pair ankle socks, 1 pair light, 1 pair warm Merino wool)
- 2 boxer shorts
- Evoc wash pouch containing deodorant, tooth paste, travel tooth brush, razor, Magnesium sachets, Aspirin
- 2 pairs of Giro gloves
- tube scarf
- Castelli arm and leg warmers with UPF50 (to keep me warmer on cold mornings, as cover against the sun and to keep my sweaty skin from touching my rain gear)
- micro fiber towel
- tool roll and first aid kit (I covered those in the previous post)
- Gore rain proof overshoes
- Leatt All Mountain 5.0 rain jacket
- Gore rain pants
- Norrona fjora flex1 pants (mostly off bike)
- Dakine t-shirt
- Loose Riders lightweight hoody
all of the above aside from what I wore every day and the rain gear went into the EVOC FR Pro 20 liters backpack
On top of that I brought sun screen, body wash and chamois butt'r in small silicon flasks.
On the bike I wore 5.10 Trailcross LT shoes and for off the bike I had minimalist shoes with me.
I could probably left a pair of gloves and one or two shirts out. Then again I wore everything more than once.

tool roll and first aid kit for the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
In the outdoor first aid training in 2022 they recommended among other things the compact Ortovox Roll Doc for a basic first aid kit. It contains gloves, sterile wound covers, bandages and compresses, an emergency blanket, adhesive sutures and tape, a triangular bandage, a pincer and respiration aid. I added a tick remover and a blister cover and replaced the scissors with a Leatherman raptor (which I left out for the tour because of the pen knife in the tool roll).

In my tool roll I carry the Topeak OMNI toolcard instead of a multi tool. I found working with individual medium sized tools better than having a stubby all in one tool. Then there is "Panzertape" straight from the german army and Park Tool tyre boots to patch tears in a tyre. Schwalbe tyre levers (in 19 years using them, haven't broken any one of them), small Knipex adjustable wrench (works up to 1" or 25mm), Victorinox pen knife, Formula brake spacer and Lezyne tubless kit.
In the bottom row there is Topeak fly paper (to patch inner tubes), a Unior cassette ring tool, UDH spare mech hanger, valve adapter (to inflate a tyre at a gas station), valve core removal tool, spare brake pad (I actually brought two sets), a spare inner cable and a Spokey spoke key.
On top of that I have the OneUp Components EDC tool with spare chain lock in the steerer tube of my fork and I also took a Lezyne Alloy Drive pump and a 10ml bottle of chain lube with me.

Spoiler: Aside from the chain lube, the pen knife for cutting bread and cheese and the spare brake pads I didn't use any of the above. But better to have and not need, than the other way around.

@ascentale @sam #BikeNite A5 When we founded Monterey County Probation Dept Youth Center bike tech class (which has its 12th anniversary this month) https://bikemonterey.org/probation-dept-youth-center-bike-education.html, before tools were purchased, we asked a local pro bike mechanic for tool recommendations. He immediately recommended Park Tools, so that's what was purchased. Although we did spend many hours sorting and organizing misc donated used parts and such, e.g., many were from Santa Cruz Bike Church https://bikemonterey.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Sorting-parts-2.jpg, for new tools, the Park decision was wise. Wish we could recommend others tools to you, because we get it about cost concerns; our personal budget means we only bought ourselves one Park Tool - a floor pump - which we were lucky to find at Goodwill!

My giant list of #biketools that you'd likely need to open a bike shop is more or less complete! I've got my preferred tool first, then one or two alternates for most things. The pivot tables didn't translate over to cryptpad (better spreadsheet sharing recommendations welcome, but don't tell me to use Google or Microsoft), but the list is at least visible. What am I missing? Do you disagree about the priority on anything? Feedback please!
