¿Sabían que en la región de Big Sur, California, existe una playa cuya arena presenta tonalidades púrpuras y violetas debido a la erosión de minerales específicos en los acantilados circundantes?

Este fenómeno ocurre en Pfeiffer Beach, donde los depósitos de granate de manganeso se desprenden de las formaciones rocosas superiores y son arrastrados hacia la costa por la lluvia y el viento. La concentración de estos cristales minerales, al mezclarse con los granos de arena convencionales, crea vetas de color amatista que son particularmente visibles después de tormentas invernales o durante la marea baja.

Aunque la mayor parte de las playas del mundo están compuestas por cuarzo, la geología particular de esta sección de la costa californiana permite la acumulación de estos sedimentos densos. El contraste visual se intensifica con la humedad del agua marina, lo que ha convertido a este sitio en un punto de interés para el estudio de la sedimentología local y la observación de la dinámica costera en el Pacífico.
