Of course I'm a #boy-girl. How the fuck do you ignore over 60 years of direct personal experience whether it was pretend or not?!?!?! Right? I mean the mental habits just keep coming. Fuck me. And all of the #bifurcations & #gymnastics I went through to somehow have it work for me? LOL. Didn't work.

New paper!

Many social interactions are founded on trust, even though a selfish untrustworthy behaviour often provides a larger payoff. Thus, an implicit or explicit reward is often offered as an incentive for fair behaviour. We show that the existence of such an offer is not enough to promote trustworthiness. In fact, counterintuitively, too large rewards may suppress trust, and lowering the intrinsic cost of offering a reward is not sufficient to boost honesty.

Ever wondered how some seemingly well-functioning political systems can suddenly switch to a completely different behaviour?
Ever thought about the effect that the attention span of people towards news has on this?
Ever felt that the impact of indifferent people on the stability of the system may be stronger than that of committed persons?
Good! Here, we make a mathematical model that shows exactly this.

@benroyce I think you will find the last three paragraphs of the conclusions particularly interesting.

I was thinking about climate tipping points and realized I needed to learn more about the math describing these kinds of phenomena. I found this excellent set of lecture notes, Bifurcations in Biological Dynamics, by AndrΓ© M. de Roos.

"... KEY POINTS:
β€’ River multifurcation pathways were identified in a vector river network globally
β€’ A multifurcation scheme was added to a river network routing model to split river discharge at divergences
β€’ Accounting for multichannels improved discharge accuracy and resulted in earlier arrival of flood waves downstream of divergences…”

What happens when you make a model that includes realistic details about how people discuss ideas and decide how to act upon them? The answer is that with just 3 such elements of realism, one can mathematically explain the emergence of commonly observed situations, such as reaching a consensus and exchanging opinions, but also the separation of ideologies and the appearance of stable polarization. Not only this, but one can also account for phenomena such as peer pressure, cognitive dissonance, tactical voting and toxic idealism ( @benroyce I told you I was going to do it πŸ˜€ ) and prove how they affect the final state of the system.
