🚲💡 National Bicycle Day meets Maritime History? You bet!

This 19th-century "marine bicycle" patent by Portsmouth resident S.E. Bowden proves our city’s creativity doesn’t stop at the shoreline. 🌊🚴‍♂️

Who else wants to ride this across the Piscataqua? I'll race you!

"She Had an Affair with Her Bicycle Instructor Because Her Husband Snored"

The divorce of Samuel Freligh (b.1852 NY) and his wife Mary Miller was salacious enough to warrant several newspaper articles in 1900 NY City.

It seems that Mary was accused of having an affair with a "Bicycle Instructor," and was tired of her husband's loud snoring. When the Judge gave his ruling on the case, daughter Ida (who had sided with her mother during the proceedings) began to yell in protest and had to be removed from the courtroom.

Daughter Ida later became a #Burlesque actress in the theatre.

Samuel Freligh (b. 5 Sept 1852 NY, d. 29 Nov. 1929 NY)
Mary Miller/Muller (b. abt.1858 NY, d. 28 June 1934 NYC)
m. 28 Sept 1873 King's County, NY

Children:
Ida (1885-1972, m. Leroy Smith)
Charles Penamen (1879-1935, m. Mildred Barrett)

I have a #wiki called #Wooljersey which is where I gather the #stories of the people, places, clubs, #rides, #races of the #bicycle #culture in the #SanFranciscoBayArea during the late #19thCentury and early #20thCentury. I have this belief that, by learning about the love of the #bike we once had, we can ensure a greater #bicycleculture in our future. And I just like to read and share the stories of the past, there are some good ones.

@wooljersey

Here is an #atom #feed account I made. It shows every change on the wiki. I could improve the feed, but this is new, and the URL is non-editable.

If you follow it, you'll get the new and changed pages as I make them. You can also follow it by following the #BicycleHistory hash tag.

If you'd like to contribute to https://wooljersey.com, please let me know.

Hello! I’m a historian who has written about bicycling history, the Tour de France, popular culture history, sports history, modern Europe. Now: booze history, bourbon, how alcohol, race, cultural, world history intersect. My pro life = teaching college students, which I love. I enjoy satire.
