Sicilianews24.it: Catania, catturato ex poliziotto penitenziario condannato per mafia e corruzione
Catania, former prison police officer convicted of mafia and corruption captured.
How is it possible that a former Prison Police director, sentenced to ten years imprisonment for extremely serious crimes, had managed to evade justice for months by hiding in his own city? This question was posed by many after the recent arrest, in Catania, of a man originally from Catanzaro, who was previously serving at the Bicocca prison.
The 56-year-old former official was the subject of a prison warrant issued by the Catania District Attorney for corruption and aiding organized crime associations. As soon as news of the imminent execution of the order became known, the man became untraceable, triggering a tight manhunt involving police forces and investigative services.

“We’ve been accustomed to injustices for ten years”: the mother of Regeni comments on the lack of funding for the documentary film.
“We’ve become accustomed to these injustices over the past ten years.” Paola Deffendi, the mother of Giulio Regeni, comments on the failure to fund the documentary about the murdered researcher, killed ten years ago in Egypt. She does so from the stage of the University of Milan – Bicocca where this morning, together with her husband Claudio and legal representative Alessandra Ballerini, she presented the film “Giulio Regeni – Tutto il male del mondo” produced by Fandango and Ganesh. A special screening as part of the “Universities for Giulio Regeni” initiative, promoted by life senator Elena Cattaneo and involving 76 universities and fifteen thousand people. “We knew there had been this request for funding – Deffendi explained – when we heard about it, we were sorry for those who invested, for those who really put their heart and soul into it. Our greatest regret was this.”
The documentary, directed by Simone Manetti and written by Emanuele Cava and Matteo Billi, reconstructs through testimonies and archival images the misleading investigations and omissions that the Regeni family had to face over these ten years in their attempt to reach a legal truth. For the Rector of the University of Milan – Bicocca, Marina Brambilla, it is “a necessary, cultural and civil resistance documentary because it helps to keep the memory alive.” For this reason, the decision not to fund it is “unfathomable” for life senator Elena Cattaneo “which is why the resignations of some members are further proof that something is wrong.”

"In line with its ‘timeful’ approach, the book starts working towards its end once we arrive at financialization in the form to which we are accustomed. By this point, Bicocca is almost completely stripped of its old working-class identity. Though the authors do not write in a melodramatic tone here, it’s sad to see that, after a century of struggle, the area is now known as a ‘no-man’s-land’. It was not always planned like this; in the 1980s, Pirelli’s plan was to turn Bicocca into a leading centre of high-tech industrial development named ‘Technocity’. But already by the 1990s, company management realized that basing the neighbourhood’s development entirely on real-estate speculation was much more profitable. In stark contrast, then, with the supposedly ‘dynamic’ financial markets determining the rhythm of its development, Bicocca is now best described by the authors as ‘decaffeinated urbanity’.
In that sense, Class Meets Land reminds more of the financial markets it takes issue with than of present-day Bicocca: it’s a fast-paced book, in the best sense of the word, and nowhere do the authors trip into excessive theoretical reflection. Yet, its biggest strength lies in Kaika and Ruggiero’s methodological insistence: the struggle between class and capital is never lost sight of, and each historical event is neatly related to what preceded and followed it. As such, they make a convincing case for approaching financialization in its specific historical context and from the perspective of local class struggles."

With the increasing financialization of our everyday lives, land financialization has been a pressing concern for critical geographers and urbanists alike. Typically, studies on the phenomenon take a grand view, focusing, for example, on the role of global capital flows, or treating financialization as a ‘new’ regime of accumulation. But the more practical implications of financialization tend to stay underexamined in these more macro-level analyses. In Class Meets Land: The Embodied History of Land Financialization, Maria Kaika and Luca Ruggiero – professors in Urban Planning and Political Geography respectively –take a different direction: they approach the financialization of land from…
