A walk through a birch grove on the last evening of September.

It felt good. There is something about being surrounded by birches – by white.

A small detail in the woods earlier this month. I noticed a spruce branch touching the trunk of a silver birch by chance one day while I was walking home. I snapped a photo and then forgot it until today. It's simple, but I quite like it actually.

This is the national tree of Finland, a silver birch, photographed a few hours ago. They are starting to bloom – earlier than usual, I think. Fortunately I'm not allergic to their pollen. We call the fresh young leaves "hiirenkorvat", loosely translated as "mouse ears". They are another wonderful sign of the advancing spring here. "Mouse-eared" birches look so pretty. Oh, and the smell of birch leaves and its cultural significance to us Finns.
