I’m doing a slow read/reread of Beryl Bainbridge’s novels this year. Slow largely because the novels are dire. Misery and obliviousness packed into very short books and concise prose. I’ve just finished A Quiet Life (1976)—it’s unrelenting in its unhappiness—and I’m going to need a breather before picking up Injury Time (1977).
