Berthoud Pass is popular for backcountry skiing/snowboarding, but the road leading to the summit of School of Mines Peak has very little avalanche risk, with a windblown slope less than 30 degrees steep and a switchback road with large post markers leading to the summit.

If you want to climb something in winter with low avalanche danger and less difficult navigation this is one of your best options near Denver.
