This Is My GlasgowIt's nestled in a hollow, known as a corrie, carved out by a glacier during the last ice age, and is surrounded by a horseshoe of three munros (the name given to a mountain over 3000 ft in height in Scotland). These are Ben Lawers (left), An Stùc (middle), and Meall Garbh (right).

Today was a bit of a weird one weather-wise. We left Glasgow in sunshine this morning to climb a couple of munros on the Ben Lawers range. By the time we were coming back down, it was snowing. As we drove back to Glasgow, the sun returned, and then by nightfall it was raining. Welcome to Spring in Scotland.

As they are generated by the observer's shadow, Brocken Spectre appear to follow you as you move, and may be the basis for many myths, including the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui and the Yeti.

This is something I encountered on my climb up Ben Lawers on Saturday, and it's a phenomenon I've wanted to see for a very long time. The shadowy figure in the middle is called Brocken Spectre and it occurs when your shadow is projected onto cloud lying below you on a mountain. The circles of colour are known as a glory, and these are often, but not always, associated with Brocken Spectre.

A wee trip out of the city today to climb Ben Lawers, the tenth highest mountain in Scotland. The summit was clear, but it was surrounded by a sea of clouds with other peaks rising like islands around it. This was the neighbouring Beinn Ghlas, with a fellow climber just visible at the top. I just love living so close to scenery like this!
