Hany Mehanna (هاني مهنى) – The Miracles of The Seven Dances (عجائب الرقصات السبعة) (1973, Egypt)

Hany Mehanna (b. 1947) – “the organ king of Cairo” – is a renowned composer, arranger, and producer who started his career in music backing some of Egypt’s and the greater Arab world’s “Golden Age” icons (including Umm Kulthum, Warda, Fayza Ahmed, and Abdel Halim Hafez) and playing in the legendary Al-Firqa Al-Masiya (“The Diamond Orchestra”). On this, his only full-length solo album – “the belly dance holy grail” – we catch a glimpse of why Mehanna’s funky and hypnotic psychedelic experiments on the keyboard made him a key (sorry) figure in making the keyboard a key (again, sorry) instrument in modern Egyptian music. We also get to witness one of the greatest album covers to ever exist – like, just look at that, it’s absolutely breathtaking! Mehanna would go on to write the score of some 93 films and 38 TV series[1] and, uh, share a luxury jail space with the sons of ousted Egyptian President Mubarak.[2] Life can take some interesting turns.
