Update on ***The Legend of Rosy Clouds***, iQIYI’s belatedly released adaptation of the Japanese novel series ”Saiunkoku Monogatari” (彩雲国物語) by Yukino Sai (雪乃紗衣) set in an imaginary ancient China, better known to English speakers the 2 season anime of 20 years ago.
It looks like it’s an iQIYI exclusive, with YOUKU the only other streaming service offering the show. That said episodes 1-3 are currently available to watch with ads on YouTube in North America on iQIYI’s English subbed channel. It’s enough to get a taste of this 40 episode series and decide if you’d be up to subscribing to iQIYI for a month.
My own take so far is that it’s a bit rougher in the post production than one would expect, but after being benched for more than two years due to an IP issue, it’s unsurprising. The main leads are unexpectedly dubbed by voice actors when both have well recognizable voices. It’s still kicking off with a lot of fun, and its own take on the original light novels.
MDL translation of the Synopsis
*In the legendary Nine Cities, Fan Yun, a fallen noblewoman, crosses paths with Qi Zheng, the cunning and ambitious city lord. What begins as suspicion soon turns into an alliance as they navigate power struggles, hidden schemes, and shifting loyalties. Together, they must face challenges that test their convictions and discover trust, friendship, and love along the way.*
There are some great original songs for this drama. *Dreamlike Life* is by contra tenor Zhou Shen (aka Charlie Zhou).
Trained in Bel Canto in Lviv, Ukraine, Zhou Shen has an incredible voice.
Here’s a multilingual lyric video from Peachey Blossom — I’ve seen an official music video but it doesn’t seem to be have been officially posted outside Mainland Chinese social media as yet.
