Die Blauflügel-Prachtlibelle ist vor allem an schnell fließenden, beschatteten und kalten Bächen und Flüssen, die mindestens 40 cm breit sind, zu finden. Ihre Eier legt die Libelle nur in Fließgewässern ab. Die Larven halten sich zwischen Wasserpflanzen und Wurzeln auf. Ab und an findet man sie aber auch auf Treibgut, unter Steinen, auf Totholz und an unterspülten Ufern. V.a. die Larven leiden unter der Verschmutzung und Verbauung der Gewässer. Um die Larven und somit die gesamte Art zu erhalten, ist der Erhalt und die Wiederherstellung naturnaher Abschnitte von Fließgewässern sehr wirksam.

After rare ecounters with male C. virgo, I finally got to see my very first female, meaning that this species is ready to settle down and live right next to C. spendens.

While I got three shots of this female, two will be reserved for the 2025 highlights at the end of this season.

Jewel of the Stream: The Beautiful Demoiselle in Kampina

While exploring the serene Kampina nature reserve near Oisterwijk, I encountered the enchanting Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), or "bosbeekjuffer" in Dutch. This damselfly is renowned for its metallic blue-green body and shimmering wings, making it a captivating subject for nature enthusiasts.

The Beautiful Demoiselle thrives along unpolluted, fast-flowing streams with sandy or gravelly beds, often bordered by lush vegetation. Males are territorial, perching on bankside plants to defend their domain and attract females. Their presence indicates a healthy aquatic ecosystem, as they are sensitive to water quality and habitat changes.

Capturing this delicate insect with my Canon 7D Mark II and Sigma 100–400mm lens was a rewarding challenge. Its graceful flight and vibrant colors highlight the rich biodiversity of Kampina. Moments like these underscore the importance of preserving our natural habitats for future generations to appreciate.

Among the people I trust the least, even more so than half of my teachers from my old school and now sharing the first spot with my last orthodontist that did nothing but damage two teeth whilst being pissed all the time, are oral surgeons. Poor consultation and an on average quite petty tone towards other patients leaving negative reviews on Google Maps (myself excluded since I don't leave reviews online anymore). This one tops the cake by what appears to be intentional miscommunication towards everyone, including their colleagues already preparing everything for the first surgery that pretty much got rescheduled while a nurse was preparing the napkin on the same day of my second surgery, despite my explicit wishes to get that stuff done on two different dates. Then again, this surgeoun radiates the same bad vibe I also get from Settele (yes, the main author of "Tagfalter in Deutschland“) and the vast majority of other academics (which is not due to some sort of "anti-intellectualism" on my behalf, quite the opposite, but the general overtly snobbish and arrogant mannerisms of many academics I got to meet and observe already put me off all the way back to grammar school that made me nope-out of A levels altogether). He also is a board member of several local dentist organizations, including the "KZV" of my state, so even reporting my issues to authorities would prove fruitless.

At the very least I already finished this month's summary in advance and now will be able to get back to the summary of 2024, where a lot of stuff in and around my study area happened. This male Calopteryx virgo from May was particularly fond of my camera and outright posed in front of me long enough to even get another shot with my phone camera right in front of its head.
