Yesterday, I got to take a visiting Mastodon mutual to bao, the dimsum restaurant on Valencia St in the Mission.
It is one of very few places where you can have dimsum for dinner (sit down dimsum is typically a breakfast / brunch thing).
The standard was as good as any other high quality dimsum place I like. They have a much smaller menu compared to a traditional dimsum hall, but large for a Chinese restaurant in the Mission. They have all of the classics.
I would try everything there except the xlb (I’m picky and don’t think Cantonese people do it well). The standard dimsum classics (har gow, siu mai, turnip cake, woo kok) were all good.
They have plenty of veg options as well, well marked on the menu.

I am a resident of the Bay Area who likes to blog about the best places to see, eat, and go for tourists and residents alike. I am a true foodie who likes to get a good value for my money, so most of my posts are about inexpensive to moderately affordable restaurants in the area. Have a recommendation for me? Please drop me a comment.
East Oakland / San Leandro Mexican food adventure:
First stop is El Borreguito Michoacano
It’s not even on the map! Excellent barbacoa
My favorite thing to do is to plan weekend trips with friends to neighboring cities outside SF with better immigrant food.
This weekend, a taco adventure to deep east Oakland and San Leandro; then Indian street BBQ kebabs in Fremont. (On different days)
I love to highlight the amazing immigrant run restaurants in the Tenderloin. I think I’ll do it again, this time writing about some new-ish ones.
1. Kimbap Heaven on Polk & Eddy
Probably the best kimbap I’ve had in SF. Very good range. They also have excellent Korean fried chicken (get the one covered in cheese if you, like me, love that flavor profile).
They also have a legit good range of Korean street food like ‘rabeokki’ (ramen and rice cake, together in a sauce).

I’m proud to be an SF person who can answer the ‘best taco trucks in east Oakland?’ Question

This is one of my fave Oakland Mexican spots, and they’re now open in Jack London square. For a long time, you just had to go to their house to eat. I’ll miss that vibe but this is great for them

My fave SF bakeries are the ones with more than one savory pastry.
So that’s Juniper, The French Spot and b. patisserie
Adding Arsicault and Neighbor Bakehouse
