The #CairoFire, also called #BlackSaturday, began on #ThisDayInHistory in 1952. About 750 buildings, many foreign-owned, were looted & burnt, including shops, cafés, nightclubs, cinemas. It was revenge for the #BattleOfIsmailia, where British troops had murdered Egyptian police.
In a tactic repeated by countless colonial régimes, the UK on #ThisDayInHistory in 1952 sent troops to attack a #police station, as supposedly they were not working hard enough to stop #anticolonial militants. With a tank's backing, they killed 50 cops in the #BattleOfIsmailia.
