I got all excited seeing a leaflet of the #MuseumOfMusicHistory, but it turns out they don't actually have a museum you can visit, just a lot of stuff in storage. With the #BateCollection still closed, it would be nice to have such a #museum for #MusicalInstruments one can actually visit ... https://momh.org.uk/about-us/

I do love the #BateCollection and have their poster on my wall, but as my own instrument collection has grown a bit in the last few years, I'm beginning to feel they don't have a vast number of instruments. They tell me 3/4 of the collection are in the current display. Their catalogue has 2698 entries, but these include lots tools and accessories, and instrument parts such as a cello spike listed near the end. So maybe 1,000 complete instruments? https://bate.web.ox.ac.uk/catalogue #oxford

#Oxford #today is the last chance to see the #BateCollection of #MusicalInstruments in its historic premises in St. Aldates, open from 2-5. And to play their #theremin or #serpent. Closed from tomorrow until they reopen in the new Schwarzman building some time in the summer. Staff told me they won't have more space there, but will use more efficient display technology, such as drawers.
