I had a good dive yesterday, but nowhere near THIS good. Some of my friends had an incredible encounter with a basking shark on a shore dive in Rockport, Massachusetts!

Basking sharks are the second largest fish (after the whale shark) and open their huge mouths to swallow water full of tiny plankton, which gets filtered out as the water passes through their gills. These amazing creatures grow up to 30 feet long!

Here's one for all of you shark lovers out there! Through the #FSBISponsorshipGrant, we were able to support an incredible short film called "Secrets of the Basking Shark" by Swimming Head Productions (directed by Tasha Phillips). The film seeks to explore and understand this mysterious, endangered creature that despite reaching 12m in length, usually swims by our shores unnoticed.

Even at 3-500 metres from where I was sat on the cliff, the fin was still distinctly visible.

Friend’s were out kayaking here the day before when they found themselves amongst Basking Sharks & Minke Whales. “The plankton was fizzing”.

While they were out one of the local whale Watching boats arrived.

A review of elasmobranch breaching behavior: why do sharks and rays propel themselves out of the water into the air? https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10641-024-01584-5

"It takes a lot of energy for a #shark or #ray to leap out of the water – especially a massive creature like a #BaskingShark (12 meters, 4.5 tonnes)... breaching must serve some useful purpose."

Sharks and rays leap out of the water for many reasons, including feeding, courtship and communication

Breaching is one of the most spectacular behaviors among marine animals. A recent review shows that many shark and ray species breach, and identifies the most commonly hypothesized reasons.
