My No Spend Year | Michelle McGagh | TEDxManchester

@AleksandraSamulenkova amazing! I designed signage, menus and a customized version of one of my typefaces for a friend’s Vietnamese restaurant near my old office in NYC. And he gave me Vietnamese coffee every morning on my way to the office and occasional free lunch. That was maybe the most “value” I’ve ever felt I got for my work. Money is useful, but getting free coffee from him every morning felt so much better emotionally, and I was happy to see my typeface in use #barterEconomy
15 years ago I designed a logo for a friend’s fashion brand for a pair of their jeans. Today they still use my logo, and I still wear their jeans. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Admittedly, both are slightly out of date.

Ever wish you could trade your time doing something you love for help doing something you don't know how to do? Simbi is making is possible. It's free, easy to use, and (for the skeptical) you can test it by receiving help on something without even giving, and the person who chooses to help you still benefits. Could this be the new gift/trade economy?

When one of your friends grew too many spaghetti squash!
(Which, props, I lost everything except one pumpkin this year to squash bugs!)

Things that I traded a jar of blueberry chamomile jam for this week:
Three zucchini, three cucumbers, and six jalapeños.
A jar of pickles.
Can’t wait to see what the future of this summer holds! (Especially since I may have put in our main management group chat at work that I always accept garden extras!)

@rozeboosje Why return to #BarterEconomy rather than #GiftEconomy ?
PS that's not to say that a small local #BarterEconomy can't have a useful place alongside our #cash and #card ones. It sure can. Perhaps we should look at how we can leverage the benefits of each, and in what circumstances what mechanism is most beneficial to us.
I find it wrily funny when people try to convince others to use #CashOnly . I do understand the sentiment, but in the end the cash we all use is a #FiatCurrency . Its value is nominal only and that is one reason why we have to put up with things like #Inflation . But I never seen a compelling argument for a return to #BarterEconomy . Like it or not, we're part of a global economy, and friendly trade agreements are in everyone's best interest *glares at the #USA *
