part of the 'Heaven Room', at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. March 2024. The italian painter Antonio Verrio merges walls and ceiling in this large (and unheated) room. He is credited with popularising Baroque mural style in England. Some art snobs dismiss some of his work as 'dismal' but most people gasp with awe on entering this room. He was over 60 years of age when he started this work, which along with the 'Hell Staircase' ceiling next door took almost three years (1697-1699). He became very rich from lucrative commissions from English kings and queens and aristocracy. He died age 71 on a pension from Queene Anne, living at Hampton Court Palace in West London.
