You can see why they are sometimes called "ghostly".

Fun facts... #BarnOwls have their own genus (Tyto) and live on all continents except Antarctica.

Barn owls have excellent low-light vision, and can easily find prey at night by sight.

👉 But their ability to locate prey by sound alone is the best of any animal that has ever been tested. 👈

[This is facilitated by one ear opening being higher on the skull than the other--giving them 2-axis discrimination for sound. Most birds/animals only get left vs right.]

They can catch mice in complete darkness in the lab, or hidden by vegetation or snow out in the real world. #Birds #Hearing

American Barn Owl Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Ghostly pale and normally strictly nocturnal, American Barn Owls are silent predators of the night world. Lanky, with a whitish face, chest, and belly, and buffy upperparts, this owl roosts in hidden, quiet places during the day. By night, they hunt on buoyant wingbeats in open fields and meadows. You can find them by listening for their eerie, raspy calls, quite unlike the hoots of other owls.

Documentaries show that predators such as #barnowls, #eagleowls, #tawnyowls, #kestrels, #commonbuzzards, #redkites, #foxes can be secondarily poisoned if they eat poisoned #mice.Long-term monitoring of barn owls reveals widespread contamination with #rodenticides, while systematic monitoring is lacking in many countries. This is precisely where the agricultural and hunting lobbies intertwine:instead of promoting natural predators as allies, they defend poisoning strategies

Owl parents as a team – not as “vermin”

Barn owl parents care for their young with impressive teamwork. Why do these strictly protected mouse hunters survive despite hunting bans and the influence of the agricultural and hunting lobby?

I know that Barn Owls are as common as barns in some places, but not where I live, so I was thrilled to lay my eyes on this one a couple of days ago. My first ever!

…sounds like four again. (We keep our distance so as never to disturb).
This is a stunning success story for these wonderful red-listed creatures and a ringing endorsement of what we do here - even if we do say so ourselves!
Good for #bees is good for Barn Owls too.

Meet Billy Elliot!
The first of this year’s Barn Owl fledglings to venture out of the nest box here on World Bee Sanctuary.
Barn Owls have been here since we came along - we’ve always just taken their presence for granted and let them get on with it but we installed a nest box in the hay-shed for the first time three years ago. That first year saw four young successfully fledged. Last year five. This year it…
