#Pentagon Makes Largest Known Arms Purchase from #Israel — For Banned #ClusterWeapons
The no-bid deal for arms internationally banned for high civilian death tolls is the biggest purchase from Israel in available government records.

"The Department of Defense has quietly signed a $210 million deal to buy advanced cluster shells from one of Israel’s state-owned arms companies, marking unusually large new commitments to a class of weapons and an Israeli defense establishment both widely condemned for their indiscriminate killing of #civilians.
"The deal, signed in September and not previously reported, is the department’s largest contract to purchase weapons from an Israeli company in available records, according to an online federal database that covers the last 18 years. In a reversal of the more commonly seen direction for weapons transfers between the countries — in which the U.S. sends its weapons to Israel — the U.S. will pay the Israeli weapons firm Tomer over a period of three years to produce a new 155mm munition. The shells are designed to replace decades-old and often defective cluster shells that left live explosives scattered across #Vietnam, #Laos, #Iraq, and other nations.
"The terror of cluster weapons persists long after the guns that fired them have quieted, as civilians return to fields, forests, and settlements laced with bomblets that can explode years later without warning."

"The use of uranium weapons is absolutely unacceptable, and a crime against #humanity. Consequently the citizens of the world and all governments must force cessation of uranium weapons use. I must demand that Israel now provide medical care to all DU casualties in Lebanon and clean up all DU contamination.
"U.S. and British officials have arrogantly refused to comply with their own regulations, orders, and directives that require United States Department of Defense officials to provide prompt and effective medical care to “all” exposed individuals. "The previous and current use of uranium weapons, the release of radioactive components in destroyed U.S. and foreign military equipment, and releases of industrial, medical, research facility radioactive materials have resulted in unacceptable exposures. Therefore, decontamination must be completed as required by U.S. Army Regulation 700-48 and should include releases of all radioactive materials resulting from military operations.
"The extent of adverse health and environmental effects of uranium weapons contamination is not limited to combat zones but includes facilities and sites where uranium weapons were manufactured or tested including #Vieques; #PuertoRico; #ColonieNewYork; #ConcordMA; #JeffersonProvingGrounds, #Indiana; and #SchofieldBarracks, #Hawaii. Therefore medical care must be provided by the United States Department of Defense officials to all individuals affected by the manufacturing, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions. Thorough environmental remediation also must be completed without further delay."

I'm seeing reports of #Israel using #BunkerBuster bombs, but did you know that #DepletedUranium is often used in those bombs?
"Often, these types of bombs use depleted #uranium in their casing, similar to certain shells, which enhances their strength. While this does not make them #nuclear weapons, it does disperse #radioactive contamination at the impact site, which can be felt in an area of several meters, at low levels."

"Israel used depleted uranium shells in the alleged strike in Syria on Sunday, a senior Syrian military source told Russia Today on Monday.
"'When the explosion happened it felt like an earthquake, then a giant golden mushroom of fire appeared. This tells us that Israel used depleted uranium shells,' the source said.
"Depleted uranium is a byproduct of the production of enriched uranium for use in nuclear reactors. It is 2.5 times as dense as steel, which allows it to penetrate heavy protection. The material is known to be #toxic, but not dangerously #radioactive.
"Syrian state television claimed the bombing occurred around a military research facility at #Jamraya. The New York Times reported that the strike also targeted the bases of the elite Republican Guard and storehouses of long-range missiles."

"The Syndicate of Chemists in Lebanon (#SCL) warned yesterday that the extent of destruction and the depth of damage to buildings and the ground confirms the use of internationally banned bombs containing #DepletedUranium by #Israeli forces, warning of the risk of contracting many diseases as a result of inhaling the [#radioactive] dust caused by the bombing.
"It said in a 'very important warning” that it condemns “the barbaric aggression against civilians in Lebanon and the massacres being committed against the Lebanese people,' noting that the warning aims 'to raise awareness about the effects of inhaling the dust from Israeli bombings in several Lebanese areas.'
"'The extent of destruction and the penetration of buildings and ground by dozens of metres is evidence of the use of #bombs containing depleted #uranium, which has tremendous penetrating power,' it added.
"The SCL stressed that “the use of such types of internationally banned weapons, especially in densely populated #Beirut, leads to massive destruction, and their dust causes many diseases, especially when inhaled.'
"The SCL called on 'the international community to stop the aggression against Lebanon, and to stop the use of internationally banned bombs.'
"It also called on the Lebanese state to file a lawsuit with the #UNSecurityCouncil 'against the violations taking place on Lebanese soil and the attempted mass killings of innocent #civilians.'"
