💚 The banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) is a species of damselfly. It is often found along slow-flowing streams and rivers. This is the female, the Male is blue 💙.

I finally succeeded at discovering some individuals of C. splendens. This female, alongside another female & one male, were observed at their relatively new spot closer to my village's church, whereas another male was seen at the northwestern edge of the pond - quite a distance between the new path next to the pond & the destroyed habitat between Z II & III. The amount of individuals has dropped sharply but they're set to recover.

This one's for @poetavaquero! This female Calopteryx splendens was hard to spot due to the tansy growing near the bridge of the bike path and the area throwing a lot of shade at this time of the day (no pun intended). This particular spot is inhabited by both C. splendens and C. virgo, though the latter‘s population has remained significantly smaller even during this season where I managed to observe the first spreading southwards into my village, a tiny spot near the church now marking its southernmost occurrence relative to my designated zones.

Yesterday I finally succeeded at getting a fairly decent shot of a male Calopteryx splendens, using the bridge railing as an unconventional tripod.

While C. splendens is claiming the southern side of the bridge, C. mercuriale is beginning to dominate the shadier northern side. This is an entirely new spot for both species and it remains to be seen whether they will be allowed to stay due to the stream now being managed by a local water company that so far has not engaged in any mowing whatsoever, unlike the previous owner (my municipality) that still can be seen mowing other green areas in my village down to the naked soil at irregular intervals, oftentimes not even leaving a hideous "English lawn" behind and instead exposing the roots of the lime trees.
