Iran, new US raids in Bandar Abbas: the Basijis hit a US base, negotiations stalled after Tehran’s “bluff”
For the second time in three days, CENTCOM, the US multi-service command in the Middle East, has attacked Iranian military bases. The offensive took place in the port city of Bandar Abbas, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz: US forces reported downing four Iranian drones that “threatened the area” and then striking the base from which a fifth drone was taking off, describing the attacks as “limited and defensive,” a definition already used to justify previous raids in southern Iran.
Teheran’s retaliation did not wait. The Basij, the Revolutionary Guard, announced today that it had targeted an American base, without specifying, in retaliation for the attacks earlier by the United States, threatening “more decisive” actions if such attacks were to repeat themselves.
Attacks that arrive just hours after a possible agreement between the parties. The state Iranian television presented a practically final draft of the peace agreement between Iran and the United States on Wednesday afternoon: in the agreement, the Trump administration committed to withdrawing its military forces “from the area surrounding Iran” and to lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports. In return, the regime of Ayatollah Khamenei would have guaranteed to restore to pre-war levels the number of commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz within one month of the agreement’s signing. The management and the maritime traffic through Hormuz, according to the draft agreement, would have been controlled by Iran in cooperation with Oman.
A completely denied agreement by the United States, with the White House having described it as “totally false”: Trump, speaking from Washington, reiterated that his administration would not accept Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to “blow up” Oman if it did not “behave like everyone else,” guaranteeing the free movement of ships in the strait.
In his speech from the White House, Trump, on the one hand, recognized the concerns about the consequences of a prolonged conflict, but at the same time trying to reassure Americans and voters, the midterm elections are getting closer, that an agreement with Iran is near.
This rather questionable thesis, considering the messages coming from Tehran. Ebrahim Azizi, Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament, reiterated that the regime will not deviate from its “red lines,” namely “the right to uranium enrichment, the possession of enriched uranium, authority over the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of international sanctions.”
