When I was a kid--American in Darmstadt, Germany--we had US military base privileges bc my mom taught for DODDS. The CambraiFritsch Kaserne library had a program where you could bring as many paperbacks in as you wanted and exchange them for an equal number of other paperbacks. My dad did exactly that, and That's how he and I did most of our reading through my teen years.
