In praise of the copy: Rembrandt, 1635, " the naughty child". What really stands out here is the speed. The scene will be over in less than a second. The small child’s shoe is still in mid-air. And the two shadows embrace and frame the image, lending it a solidity within which this lightning-fast scene unfolds.
