The damn AI scrapper bots are ruining more and more of the internet.

swcombine.com is the latest small community affected (that I'm a personally aware of)

Fucking thousand-fold increase in traffic. And you can't do much about it.

I wish the European commission would go two orders of magnitude beyond what they occasionally do well, impose strict limits on scraping, and threaten to just shut down the company and put the C-level in prison, for repeat offenders.

Some managers would probably still be willing to risk stuff for money, but I don't think VC funds would be willing to risk their billion dollar investments.

But, that's just utopia.

When protecting a set of small static websites against the onslaught of AI crawler bots, something like Anubis is a lot of effort to install.

So, I knocked up something that might help against the dumber bots, coded entirely inside nginx config so there's no other moving parts to install.

I've done some isolated testing but haven't installed it in anger yet - but I might add it to e.g. my blog and #Faircamp sites.

Using Simple Passwords To Block AI & Bots?

Had a chat with a friend, about how to keep blog posts away from bots and mainly AI.
I have no idea if the "solution" we came up with would work:

I use wordpress.com, the free version for my notes. That service has the option to password protect individual pages/blog posts.

The point is not to have a complicated password, since I suspect entering "apple orange" in the password field is as hard as if it was "%Ux79+/Wlq" for any kind of bot.

Also, the password _would be prominently on display_ on the main page and the same for all pages on the site. The point is not to block out people from the pages but bots.
For ease, I would use a javascript button to copy the password in addition [1].

Now, the question is

Since I'm not a programmer, just a dabbler, sort of. Would this work, or is there a great gap in my reasoning, that I have missed?
