"As #Russia continues to pound #Ukrainian cities, #archivists are working underground daily to rescue and record #Jewish #history—page by page, name by name. According to former Jewish Agency chairman #NatanSharansky, who today serves as chairman of the #BabynYar #Holocaust Memorial Center (#BYHMC), the effort to digitize millions of Jewish records linked to #BabiYar has become a race against time.

“There are more than 20 million #documents,” Sharansky told JNS in an interview at the #Jerusalem Media Hub on Dec. 23. “We’ve already digitized nine million—during the war, under fire.”

“These documents are in the last moments of their life,” he added. “If we don’t save them now, they will be lost forever.”

On 29 September 1941, one of the largest massacres of the Holocaust began at Babi Yar, a ravine near Kyiv, Ukraine. Over the course of two days, Nazi forces and their collaborators murdered more than 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children. #BabiYar www.facebook.com/respect.dive...

Today In Labor History September 29, 1941: Nazi forces, with the aid of the Ukrainian auxiliary police and local Ukrainian collaborators, began the two-day Babi Yar massacre, killing some 33,771 Jews. Other victims included Soviet prisoners of war, communists and Romani people. It was the largest single massacre in the Holocaust up to that date, and the 3rd largest, overall, after the 1941 Odessa massacre (>50,000 victims) and Aktion Erntefest of November 1943 in occupied Poland (> 42,000 victims). During the Nazi occupation, up to 150,000 people in total were murdered at Babi Yar.

The horrific details of #BabiYar were exposed in Anatoly Kuznetsov’s #book which he smuggled out of #Russia in 1969. Kuznetsov was a witness to the massacres at the age of 12 and kept a diary of what happened.

A Censored and Forgotten Holocaust Masterpiece

Censored and then forgotten, Anatoly Kuznetsov’s Babi Yar, about the Nazi occupation of Kyiv, is again painfully relevant.
